About Our Project

We are student researchers from the University of Utah involved in a community group research project as part of the Mestizo Arts and Activism Project. The Mestizo Arts and Activism Project works with young adults living in West Side Salt Lake City and supports them in their process of identifying important issues the student researchers face in their everyday lives, addressing the issues and taking action. Since January 2008 the student researchers have come up with three identifiable issues facing their community: undocumented students and access to higher education, immigration and stereotypes and immigration and discrimination. They’ve also started a new project that involves mapping communities and what the community looks like to each of the individual students and as a whole.

The part we played in the process was finding supportive information for the students and their intended audiences that address the issues the students found essential. We included information they could utilize to back up their findings and/or assertions and enhance their research. We hope the information provided will be helpful in the process of addressing the issues and acting on these issues This information includes support groups and organizations, and information to help them access resources available to them.

This process was extremely eye opening and very rewarding. To play a part in such a wonderful project was extremely gratifying. Not only were we able to offer resources to the community we also learned a lot from the community members that will have lasting effects on our lives.
